Vale Bob Plummer
Community Radio Broadcaster & Helpful Friend
Facing the loss of a person in your life can feel so overwhelming, hopeless, fearful, lonely, and sad. That is definitely the case with Bob Plummer; Bob recently lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday 31st July 2007 aged 64 years.
Bob Plummer became involved with Country Music by doing what Bob did best, helping someone out. Bob always helped out where he could & when he could, once you had Bob as a friend he was pretty hard to get rid of which is a good thing.
Bob Plummer started his own program on 2RDJ-FM located in Burwood, Sydney on the 29th May 1996 and soon built up quite a fan base due to his quirky sense of humour and diverse country music collection. Mind you Bob not only knew his Country Music but he was definitely a walking encyclopaedia pretty much on a various collection of styles and formats of music.
Bob Plummer joined me on All Kinds of Country on 2SER-FM, Sydney in December 2000 until late last year when due to health problems he stopped coming in but that didn’t mean he still didn’t help out when he could. That friendship and support continued for the next 7 years. Bob Plummer was the first voice the people heard on a Saturday morning before they went to air with me. He was also the voice on the airwaves that filled in for me when I took the occasional Saturday morning off.
There are only a handful of people who come into your world, and touch your life in a dramatic fashion. Some of the people are just flickers of light during a long life, while others are consistent glows for years. Bob Plummer was one of those consistent ones always on hand to help out not only in the promotional side of Country Music but also on the personal side.
This testament was seen when one of his childhood idols; Smoky Dawson & his wife became great mates, they knew they could always called upon Bob & his wife Jill when ever they needed assistance from driving them somewhere to assisting with odd jobs around the place. It was also the case for the Schneider Sisters (Rita & Mary) who often had assistance from Bob for the odd job or two.
We shared some wonderful times together. I will never forget them. I can honestly say that there are only a few people who have walked into my life and changed it forever. Not only my life and my family but a lot of Country Music Personalities, Country Music Listeners, and Country Music identities/industry personnel. Bob taught me that life is short, and the most important part of life is the people in it. I will be grateful for his friendship forever.
Like many of us involved with community radio it’s not only the voice on the air but it’s the back up staff that ensures that the word of country music is spread around and a lot of the time it’s a unthankful job, but it’s due to your passion for the music that you do it. This is just my little way of making sure Bob Plummer is thanked & acknowledged for the many years and timeless hours that he and his wife Jill contributed to the country music industry.
