After being politely booted from the Hurstville Boys High School Band for breaking down into funk-beats during the Theme To Hogan’s Heroes, John Blake AKA (DJ) Soup became a pro basketballer with the Sydney Kings. He then realized there was more to life than chucking a pig-skin and started pursuing his real love, music.
Soup released the influential album ‘Souperloops’ in 1997 which inspired many budding young musicians like the Resin Dogs and Superfluid to take up the art of ‘sampology’. Soups next release was the acclaimed ‘Sleekism’ with infamous Fat Pizza star Sleek the Elite which ingeniously fused beats of Western and Arabic cultures.
Soup went on to release two more albums – ‘Eclectro’ (1999) and ‘From Anuva Planet’ (2000). This album featured collaborations with the likes of Gift of Gab from Blackalicious and Swollen Members from Canada. The Gab track got remixed by Katalyst and DJ Vadim.
Soup’s latest offering ‘Beatroot’ (The Edible Root Of The Beat) is a freak out of quirky samples and big dope drums. Recorded completely at home in his studio called ‘HEAbdENDERs Retreat’ and inspired by such things as ‘The Michael Jackson Trial, suicide bombers, the fall of the USSR, conspiracy theories and shapeshifting reptiles the album is an explosion of eclectic aural goodness.
