Spin the Black Circle 18th March 2017 : Never Cool - Sophisti-Pop.

Destined to be consigned to the dustbin of history for all eternity due to a complete absence of hipster - friendly ' authentic ' values, sophisti-pop is ( according to the Rate Your Music website ) characterised by audophile production values and an affinity with groove - oriented musical forms. Plenty of surprisingly affecting musical moments can be found in our two hours. As George Michael said, listen without prejudice.

We could have played this song, but ran out of time :

We did play these ones, though :

China Crisis King In A Catholic Style (Wake Up)

Spin the Black Circle 25th February 2017 : The Canterbury Scene - A Loose Congregation

Equal parts English surrealism ( Edward Lear, Lewis Carroll ), pastoral 20th Century classical music (Edward Elgar, Britten ) and pro - rock aspirations, the Canterbury Scene as a musical genre is a broad enough church to include Belgian, French and Japanese natives as participants. Robert Wyatt, however, seems to be the very epicentre of the whole proposition...

Spin the Black Circle 11th February 2017 - Cool Jazz on a Hot Night

Spin the Black Circle 17th December 2016 : The Happy Sad World of The Beach Boys

This week we're joined by our good friends and eminent musicologists Dr. Jadey O'Regan and Dr. Tim Byron for a two hour exploration of the music of The Beach Boys from 1962 to 1967 or thereabouts. Things are not what they seem, and contradictions abound : the music's up, the words are down ; the band don't surf but represent represent beach culture to the world and themselves ; the band epitomise wholesomeness but embody anything but in reality. Ultimately, music as a survival mechanism emanating from a difficult family life goes on to become a salve to the world at large, an exercise in mass therapy for artist and audience simultaneously. Heady stuff...

Here's an appropriately awkward performance of "Caliornia Girls " followed by an equally awkward skit with Bob Hope and Jack Benny ( ! ) :

The Four Freshmen Graduation Day

Spin the Black Circle 3rd December 2016 : " Daddy, What's a Supergroup ? "

Well, Cindy, it's a funny thing about supergroups : when independently famous musicians get together, the whole is not necessarily greater than the sum of its parts, as Aristotle might say. We only had time to delve into 90s and 80s permutations, but will dig deeper ( the 60s and 70s ) in another show. In the meantime, here's Eric Burdon, Stevie Winwood, Long John Baldry, Julie Driscoll and Rod Stewart gettin ' their mojo on in 1965...
