Monday 27th February 2017 - Today Sydney community radio broadcaster 2SER 107.3 launches Just Words — an investigative podcast series that goes beyond the hype and headlines of Australia's racial discrimination laws.
The new podcast is an in-depth exploration of the culture war sparked by section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act, which makes it unlawful to insult, offend, humiliate or intimidate based on race. Laws like this pose a particular challenge for a liberal democracy: does it protect or threaten our fundamental rights? It leads to the question of what constitutes 'free speech' — and who gets to exercise it?
Just Words gets the true stories of those who have invoked the Racial Discrimination Act and those who have had it used against them. It features original interviews with a range of voices on the subject — some familiar, some rarely heard of before, from a Holocaust survivor to a Dutch comedian.
The series comes at a critical time both locally and internationally. It's a chance to catch up and check in on the issues raised by 18C. Late last year, a Parliamentary Inquiry was called to look into section 18C and the outcome of that inquiry will be released in a report on February 28. Ahead of this, Just Words will launch with three episodes in its first week.
About the series, 2SER Managing Director Melanie Withnall said: "This is our first ever original podcast series. 2SER Staff and volunteers have worked collaboratively over the summer on this educative and investigative series, that we hope will contribute to this important national discussion we are having."
Series Executive Producer Emma Lancaster said: "We are excited to bring our listeners a series that goes beyond the common hype and headlines on our race laws. We wanted to unpack these complex legal cases, some of them known and some unknown, so someone can walk away from listening to an episode and have a greater understanding of how 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act works and plays out in the real world."
Just Words is a seven-part series hosted by 2SER 107.3's Breakfast Presenter Nic Healey. New episodes are released each Monday starting from February 27.

Mistletone & 2SER Present El Guincho at Oxford Art Factory February 15
The great El Guincho of "Bombay" fame brings his kaleidoscopic Spanish fireworks back to Sydney for the first time in 5 years for a full band performance with special dreamboat guest Donny Benet.
A favourite with Australian audiences, El Guincho has transformed huge crowds into ecstatic tropical dance parties at Meredith Music Festival and Laneway. Emerging from a five year break, Canary Islands-born Pablo D az-Reixa - or El Guincho, as he is known and loved - shared a new album, HiperAsia, earlier this year.
Released locally via Mistletone, HiperAsia is another enormous musical leap for El Guincho, recorded in the Canary Islands, Barcelona and Madrid, in a chaotic period for Southern Europe. The music that has emerged is immediately disconcerting; prickly, bright and uncompromising and demanding, it has resonated with a whole new audience of El Guincho fans.
El Guincho changed the face of music videos with his viral hit "Bombay" (over 2.3 million hits), which echoes in his wild new videos for "Comix" and "Pizza" (see bel0w). He has recently been nominated for a Latin Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video for "Comix".
Ever the innovator, El Guincho is reinventing music distribution, having launched his HiperAsia collection with wearable tech which comes with NFC (Near Field Communication) technology and an animated Vaporwave short film.
"El Guincho's most resolutely electronic work yet, Hiperasia buzzes like an ice-cream headache (and) reaches frequencies most indie-electronic fusions never knew existed" - PITCHFORK
"A vivid, feverish soundworld of Auto-Tuned vocals, idyllic electronics and machine beats solid enough to stand alongside the best US R&B currently has to offer" - THE WIRE

2SER is a proud Media Partner of Think Inc Present Xiuhtezcatl Martinez at The Factory Theatre, February 12
Displaying a wisdom far beyond his years, Xiuhtezcatl ("Shu-tez-caht") Martinez has been speaking on behalf of the planet since the tender age of six. Today still just a teenager, his extraordinary eloquence has moved audiences which include world leaders, Hollywood celebrities and other impassioned young people across continents who have joined his Earth Guardians activism movement. Through public speaking and hip-hop, Xiuhtezcatl is spreading his message and shifting human consciousness – and in 2017, his message will reach Australia and New Zealand.
Xiuhtezcatl made headlines around the world when he stood before the UN Earth Summit in 2015. Opening his statement in Nahuatl, he went on with the fluency of a spoken word poet to stress the immediacy of climate change, its impact as an issue of human rights, and to lambast politicians for over 20 years of inaction. "We have to remember, we are all indigenous to this earth and that we are all connected"." he urged the delegates. "We are being called upon to use our courage, our innovation, our creativity and our passion to bring forth a new world." Expect to be inspired, challenged and entertained by this impassioned young eco-warrior and musician.
