History – “Dhanak”: A New Era in Hindustani Radio

Hindustani radio program “Dhanak” has been on air for the last ten years. It is on air on Sundays between 12.00 PM and 5.00 PM. This program is broadcasted from Sydney’s best Community Radio station 2SER-FM 107.3. The station is on the Internet live and reaches all of the Sydney Metropolitan areas. This program is on top of the Hindustani program ratings in Australia.

This program is presented by well-known and respected personalities Haroon and Heena Khan with style, elegance, innovations, originality, quality, clarity, variety, difference and enthusiasm.

Haroon is a Signals Engineer and possesses a First Class Honours Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering and a First Class Honours Masters Degree in Maintenance Management. He was the top graduand from UTS and won the UTS medal in the year he graduated. He is interested in bhangras and fast music.

Heena comes from Varanasi, India and is a graduate from the well-known Varanasi University. She has a good command of both Hindi and Urdu and is well versed with the Indian cultures, traditions and music etc. She presents topics that are of most interest to the Indo women and girls, including weekly segments on “Bollywood Ke Sitaare”.

Shafiq has had a wealth of experience not only in radio but also in journalism generally. He edited the tri-weekly Hindi newspaper "Jagriti" in 1967 in Fiji. Right from his college days Shafiq had a flair for writing and the hindustani languauge in general. He wrote poems and stories for the Hindi newspapers in Fiji and for some Indian monthly magazines such as the highly respected "Sarita" in New Delhi in 1960s. He also wrote and presented radio plays "geeton bhari kahaniyaan" and "waartaayen" (articles of general interest and information for the general community) and presented them on Radio Fiji (then known as the Fiji Broadcasting Commission) in the same decade. Shafiq worked in the newsroom of Radio Fiji too. He is a Chartered Accountant by profession and possesses several degrees and diplomas in accounting and business studies. Shafiq has now retired. 

The radio program Dhanak is being listened-to by people of an Hindustani background who have migrated to Australia from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Burma, the Middle East, Afghanistan, Trinidad, West Indies, Uganda, Singapore, Fiji, Bangladesh and other parts of the world. The program is extremely popular and entertaining and includes different types of old and new songs and music from India, Pakistan, Fiji and other countries. The different music and “sangeet” include the latest Bollywood movie hits, ghazals, qawwalis, shastriya sangeet, lok (folk) geets and bhangras etc. The program also includes jokes, segments on the life stories of Bollywood artists and singers, news, literary readings and information of general interest to the various Indo communities.
