A playground, BBQ, and DJ Booth: Art Gallery of NSW transformed for exhilarating exhibition

Artist Mike Hewson’s latest work transforms the Art Gallery of NSW Nelson Packer Tank into a lively, sculptural neighbourhood which is designed for play, connection and curiosity.
The Keys Under the Mat exhibition includes many unexpected elements that transform the playground into something more like a communal park: a BBQ area, a DJ booth, a steam room and sauna, an artist studio and even a laundromat. Something you’ll just have to experience for yourself…
In a conscious effort to remain environmentally sustainable, reusable soft-fall pavers feature throughout the park, which can be repurposed once the exhibition ends. The project was developed in the artist’s dynamic Sydney workshop and constructed from thousands of salvaged objects and materials.
The exhibition is free and open to everyone, so whether you’re a big kid or a small one, it’s an all-ages experience.
