2019 Invasion Day Movement Surges

Most are aware that Saturday marked 231 years since British military forces invaded Gadigal land and declared British rule over the continent.

While many Australians spent their Saturday on beaches drinking beers, celebrating a so-called Australia Day, Invasion Day Rallies were held across the country, and even spread internationally this year as protesters took to London’s Westminster Bridge where a 25 metre banner bearing the words “Abolish Australia Day” was propped up.

Following Sydney’s 2019 Invasion Day Rally, we spoke to veteran activist for Indigenous rights, Ken Canning. Canning is a Murri writer and poet who has been marching in Australia’s streets since 1966 and is apart of the Fighting in Resistance Equally group which birthed the Invasion Day Rallies.
