Mild Discomfort are a new group based in Lisbon. Recently formed in 2023 between friends from disparate parts of the world including France, the United States, Ireland and Australia with a shared affinity for driving basslines, moody guitar and keys, layered vocal dry wit and David Lynch-esque surrealism. Their debut EP “Low Expectations” is a sublime and weird three tracker of left-field post punk and out independently via their bandcamp. Distinct roadhouse vibes on this and definitely a group to keep an ear on if that’s your thing (it’s definitely ours).
Closer to home (just up the road in fact), the latest album from Rapaport (Loose Change, Big Village Records) sees the inner west hip hop stalwart teaming up with award winning saxophonist Peter Farrar (aka P.Major). More than just a fortuitous name for an album, Rap Major is a magic team-up and great summer record, featuring a range of kicked back, sunlit and jazzy beats and instrumentation constructed on an MPC4000 interplaying between sax, keys. Lyrically this one hits hard, touching on themes of self-affirmation and confronting the past. They will be launching this with a tour around the country in after the new year, stopping by the Trocadero Room in Enmore on January 30. Out now on Big Village Records & Low Key Source. Also this will be released on viny via Pozible. If you want to preorder a copy you can do so here.
Devices Hum is the debut album from Flottwegs. Flottwegs are from Sydney, featuring members of bands such as Golden Rough, Low Priorities and Olive who are inspired by the sounds of 80s new wave, krautrock, 70s art rock, and 60s garage. Recorded across various studios throughout Eora/Sydney by bandmember David Orwell, it’s a wonderful unpolished gem of oddball rock and roll. This is independently released and can be purchased on Bandcamp.
