As our year winds down (or is it up?), the incredible new music caressing our ears does not. One of the many new albums that you might consider rocking in your stocking is the latest from Brazilian Pianist, Composer (and member of Brixago 70) – Mauricio Fleury. Inspired by recent time spent in the Middle East, Revoada is a magical combination of Brazilian disco and jazz with Turkish influences that was inspired by Fleury’s time spent in Istanbul. A really excellent debut solo record and out now Altercat Records.
Since their debut in 2012, Melody’s Echo Chamber have been a group that has evolved from project to project, while remaining centred around singer and musician Melody Prochet. For this, her fourth studio album, Prochet assembled an enviable lineup of collaborators including Leon Michels (of El Michel’s Affair), Daniel Ögen (of Dina Ogon) on guitar, Heliocentrics drummer Malcolm Cattoand Sven Wunder (of Sven Wunder). Inspired by a quote from Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki about achieving equilibrium (“You must see with eyes unclouded by hate”), Unclouded is a masterful record of jazzy, textured space rock and dream pop and a sonic world well-worth being lost in. Out now on Domino Records!
Hailing from Los Angeles, Captain Planet – the (as far as we know) non-cricketing multi-instrumentalist and producer extraordinaire – has just released his sixth solo album, DIG, via Bastard Jazz Records. Captain Planet (the musician) is no stranger to the 2SER airwaves, his last record, 2023’s “Sounds like home” was a feature album on 2SER (an eventuality that resulted in a conversation with Danny Chifley at the time) The new record continues in a similar vein to that, with a myriad of guests from Brazil, Colombia, Haiti, Nigeria, Ghana and Angola collaborating across the record. It also features a reinterpretation of the music of Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen (Tony’s House). Much of the record features a dancefloor focus, and was co-produced with dance music producer Caserta.
