A transpacific tale of mates with dubplates up first: Hopeton Brown, aka Scientist, is a Jamaican record producer and musician who has been active since the 1970s, most famous for his work on dub and reggae. As well as a candidate for album title of the year, Scientist Dubs KONG to Free the Yellow King and Save the Swamp is a remix album, where he created dub versions of Australian group KONG’s 2023 album “The Yellow King”. Scientist has always been at the forefront of redefining the studio as a musical instrument and a vehicle to twist sounds to his imagination since the 1970s, and soundwise this is very familiar. Gentle summery rhythms with a tripped out sonic tapestry of piano leads, guitar strums, mellotron lines, soaring reverb and delay creating lots of interweaving melodies. Just in time for summer, it’s a great summer record. Out now on Holiday Maker Records.
Today sees Signal Chain release their debut record, Often Spring. They are a Melbourne/Naarm based five-piece who have been building a following on the local live scene for while now with their distinguished take on garage rock and dream pop. Their sound captures a dynamic combination of dusty blues, folk and jangly garage, with lots of fuzz guitar, playful 60s teen rock melodrama and melancholic folk.   The album was Mastered by producer Joe Carra at Crystal Mastering and released via Footscray Records.
Yalla Miku are a Swiss/Eritrean group based in Geneva and lead by Bongo Joe Records founder Cyril Yeterian. Their music focuses where Middle East and East Africa traditions meet electronica, post punk and krautrock grooves. “2” is their second album, seeing them dig deeper into their raw, militant and unclassifiable sound. They combine the alchemised sounds of world grooves, disco, kraut rock, folk and punk that fuses the traditional sounds of The Horn of Africa (Somalia, Eritrea and Ethiopia) with modern styles. Performed in a combination of both Arabic and French, “2” is a bold sensory assault that takes chances at every turn and a wild evolution of a group that was already pushing the envelope.
