A quick trip around the world today on the new music report. Starting with Snake Island, the latest (and second) album from UK-based producer, musician (and tattoo artist) Or Kantor. A self-described purveyor of “Surfterranea”, Snake Island takes many cues from the psychedelic past including surf rock, exotica, b-movies and Spaghetti Western soundtracks. Fans of the likes of Dorothy Ashby and Budos Band will feel right at home with the kooky, sunstroked feel of this. Out now on Anova records, it’s an island worth taking a trip to!
LA-based producer (and founder of New York indie rock trio Arc Iris) Zach Tenorio has returned this week with his second solo album, the aptly named Field Trip. Zach is a keyboardist (a very good one) and melody really shines here on a brilliant free-wheeling combination of off-kilter jazz, funk and blunted, beat-driven instrumental hip hop. An excellent solo work a fine follow-up to his first album, the Mort Garson inspired “Phone Synthesis”. It’s out on wax today on Maximum Overdub records.
Back to Eora/Sydney, and today sees the long-awaited release of Take it all, the debut album from Beth and Blue. are a local art-pop duo featuring Imogen Grist (aka Babitha) as well as Marcus Gordon (aka Spookyland).
Beth and Blue are Imogen Grist (Babitha) and Marcus Gordon (Marcus index). Initially meeting on a dating app in 2021, they bonded over a shared love of classic duets (ala Sonny and Cher) and well-crafted songwriting and have been steadily releasing beautifully crafted songs of despair and euphoria ever since. It’s a superb record that is also imbued with a sense of surrealism and haunted abstraction and out now on Impressed Records.
There is much more on the 2SER airwaves this week, keep an ear out for some stellar music from Dubbo-based rapper Akilaqui, a gem of a debut record from local indie rockers Sunscreen, the latest from Owelu Dreamhouse and much much more!
