$600M Gas-Fired Power Plant Plan

On Tuesday, the International Energy Agency released a roadmap in reaching net-zero global greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. But just on the same night, the federal government announced a $600 million plan to invest in gas-fired power plants. The taxpayer funded investment will go towards building a gas power plant in partnership with Snowy Hydro at Kurri Kurri, in hope of keeping prices low and creating a further 1800 jobs. But many including the Australian Climate Council criticised the decision as worsening climate change and increasing electricity prices. Professor Samantha Hepburn, Director of the Centre for Energy and Natural Resources at Deakin Law School, spoke with us earlier to discuss further.
