Should Australia be taxing sugary drinks?

Australia ranks in the Top 10 globally when it comes to consuming sugary soft drinks. One-third of us drink about a can a day, and all this refined sugar is contributing to chronic public health issues like obesity, diabetes and tooth decay. So should Australia introduce a sugary drinks tax? Would a tax be an effective obesity prevention measure? Or would it just be a slow and expensive way of raising the ire of libertarians and the food industry?
