How do we design cities to be safer for women?

Young women often navigate public spaces differently to men, constantly re-routing based on how safe they feel. Monash University in Victoria recently launched the XYX research lab, to explore how the worlds of design and social policy can collaborate to alleviate the problem of gendered spaces in cities. Dr Nicole Kalms and Dr Pamela Salen from the lab talked to Nic about their work so far, and their collaboration with organisation Plan International Australia.
