Dictionary of Sydney: Christmastime

Nicole Cama joins Tess to discuss the ever-changing ways in which our city celebrates Christmas.

In the 19th century, Christmas cards communicated the traditional Christmas ideals of charity and compassion. Over time, this message changed to the more commercialized holiday messages we see today. Traditions started and changed – the Martin Place Christmas Tree moved from Hyde Park in the 1960s when they decided to stop chopping down a tree every year.

Nicole also focuses on the unique multicultural Christmas traditions that developed alongside the burgeoning migrant population.
