Fire ants found in New South Wales

Fire ants are an invasive species in Australia, and originally were found in Queensland.

However, fire ants have crossed to New South Wales Northern Rivers, and they can devastate flora, and kill some animals. 

Why is this species so invasive and dangerous for the ecosystem?
