France’s Planned New Fast Fashion Tax Combatting Global Problem

The average Australian buys 56 new pieces of clothing a year and the growing number of ultra-fast fashion online shops means more textiles are ending up in landfill than ever.

France is trying to combat their ultra-fast fashion issue by implementing a A$16 tax on each piece of clothing sold, hoping to deter consumers from buying as much. And while Australia is one of the largest consumer of ultra-fast fashion in the world, there are no similar mandatory policies in place to tackle the over-consumption issue.

Tuesday Drive spoke with Professor Rowena Maguire, from Queensland University of Technology, about this issue of ultra-fast fashion, what the tax means for France, and what similar changes could help Australia to reduce its consumption.
