Landmark High Court immigration ruling, the wins and losses for refugees

Last week, the High Court delivered a historic ruling outlawing the indefinite detention of non-citizens.

Following the decision, 80 refugees were released immediately with 92 more made eligible for release, the federal government introduced a suite of conditions in response to the refugees’ release, imposing monitoring mechanisms including ankle bracelets and curfews.

While refugee advocates agree the High Court decision was a step in the right direction, there are concerns the conditions of their release are unnecessary, inhumane and infringe on refugees’ freedoms.
