More Civil Societies: Difficult women

On this week’s More Civil Societies, Eva Cox explores the idea of the ‘difficult’ woman. There’s a long history of women being called ‘difficult’ – Julia Gillard, Hillary Clinton, Virginia Woolfe, Florence Nightingale – for not behaving in a way that society finds acceptable. As a result, women are often discouraged from public office and having a public voice because of the criticism they could face. Eva asks, Do women have to be nice or do we become deemed nasty for wanting to change things?
