Politics of the World Cup

With the World Cup currently on our screens, and maybe intermittently streaming from our devices, the spectacle of what is known as the “Beautiful Game,” and the “World Game” has over its history been employed for an array of political aims. At moments it has gone on to exemplify the cosmopolitan possibilities of human co-operation, but it has also been employed towards various darker purposes. Macquarie University historian Keith Rathbone joins Drive to talk about the history of football and its entanglement with politics.
