Pollution Takes Over Cocos Island

So what do you do when a dreamy getaway destination becomes polluted with tonnes of plastic waste?

Because last week a study was released that reported on the tropical Cocos Islands – a popular holiday destination for Australians and tourists, which is now littered – literally, with debris.

Once seen as Australia’s ‘last unspoiled paradise’ the islands now harbor thousands of single-use plastics on their beaches and under the sand; And embarrassingly, this means what’s washing up on the shores is coming from us. Surveyors have found thongs, food packaging, tooth brushes – you name it.

Tune in to catch Jennifer Lavers, from the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies, who led the study into this case of mass pollution!
