Sandy soils are difficult to farm well. But a CSIRO-led project is changing that.

A group of people who are farmers and engineers stand in a crop field and alongside a tractor. There is a white board propped up on equipment demonstrating improved techniques, with two people instructing from it, and around six or seven people looking on.

Light, low-fertility soils span millions of hectares across southern Australia, and in many other countries. They’re tough to farm, and getting tougher thanks to climate change.

The long-running Sandy Soils project is finding out how to lift our ability to produce food in our most vulnerable landscapes, and do it sustainably.

To tell us about the project, what it’s found, and where to next, Dr Therese McBeath, Research Team Leader at CSIRO Agriculture and Food, joined Jack Gembitsky on the Thursday Daily.
