Syria: Saved By The Veto Again

Russia and China this week vetoed against a United Nations Security Council resolution that would impose sanctions on the Syrian government for alleged use of chemical weapons. Proposed by Britain, France and the United States, the measure on Tuesday won nine votes in favour, while three countries China, Russia and Bolivia opposed it, with Russia and China ultimately using their veto power to override the resolution. This is the seventh time for Russia and the sixth for China in the past 5 years that the countries have used the veto power to help Syria. To discuss the rationale behind the decision to veto over, The Daily was joined by Dr Binoy Kampmark, Senior Lecturer and researcher in the School of Global, Urban and Social Studies from RMIT University.
