Toxic Positivity

“Look on the bright side!” “Good vibes only!” “You’ll get over it!” These are common phrases that form part of a growing trend in the self-care section of social media. But is programming ourselves to only ever feel happy a good thing? A study published in psychological journal Emotion suggests that embracing only one side of the emotional spectrum could be more harmful than helpful. Dr. Lisa Williams, Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology at the University of New South Wales, is on the line to discuss this ‘toxic positivity’.
