Wayne’s 4X2 – 7 August 2025: Together, Michael Beach and More!

Need something to watch over the weekend but not sure where to start? Want to listen to something but don’t quite know what?

Wayne Massingham is here to save you with his weekly recommendations in film, music, and television.

Film: Together

Together explores the relationship of Millie (Alison Brie) and Tim (Dave Franco). They go on a hike near their new home, fall into a cave, and become partially stuck together. They try to navigate their new togetherness as things get increasingly weirder and weirder. This movie uses body horror in a new light, not taking the conventional slasher and gore route, but instead adopting supernatural and thrilling elements. Despite taking place in Washington DC, Together was filmed over twenty-one days with a small team in Melbourne.

Together is in cinemas now. Watch the trailer here.

Television Show: Women in Blue (Las Azules)

Set in Mexico City in the 1970s, Women in Blue follows the first female recruits of the Mexico City Police Force. Thinking they would become police officers, Gabina, Valentina, María, and Ángeles apply and get the roles, only to be assigned menial tasks. With a serial killer on the loose, they band together and start investigating the case in secret. Ten episodes of an hour each, this show keeps you hooked with its mysterious plot and social and political commentary.

Women in Blue is available on AppleTV+.

Television Show: Eric

Benedict Cumberbatch stars in Netflix’s Eric. Vincent, the host of a successful children’s show, is not as sunny as his on-screen persona. He is unhappy in his marriage, has a past with substance abuse, and his son is missing. When told to create a new character for his show, he takes inspiration from his son’s drawings of a blue monster called ‘Eric’. Things become complicated when Eric comes to life and helps Vincent try to find his son.

Eric is available on Netflix.

Album: Big Black Plume – Michael Beach

Two weeks ago, Michael Beach released his fifth studio album, Big Black Plume. Beach is a Californian-born musician now living in Naarm (Melbourne). He has an iconically 80s to 90s Aussie rock sound that makes us proud to claim him as our own. This classic indie-rock album is filled with searing guitar solos and some beautiful spare ballad songs. Recorded across both Australia and the United States, this album has many great producer and instrumentalist contributors. Fans of MJ Lenderman are going to love this one!

Big Black Plume is available on Bandcamp.
