Western Audiences’ Critical Reception To Anime Live-Action Adaptations with Dr Emerald King

Anime live-action adaptations are gaining popularity with Netflix recently releasing live-action adaptations of One Piece and Avatar, the Last Airbender to a largely positive reception. But Western audiences have a weird relationship with these works, scrutinising anime live-action adaptations critically; celebrating successes and relentlessly tearing down flops.

Dr Emerald King, Lecturer in Humanities, Global Cultures, and Languages, at the University of Tasmania, joined Danny Chifley on 2SER Breakfast to discuss Western audiences’ critical reception to anime live-action adaptations.
