Nestled in the tail end of the South West Slopes is the town of Beechworth, a historic gold rush town. It lends its name to one of Australia’s smallest but highest quality wine regions. We’ll be taking a look at the history, geography and the wineries that make up Beechworth and to do that I am joined by none other than BSC: Wine Science student Cal Lee.
2022 Vignerons Schmölzer and Brown ‘Thorley’, Nebbiolo, Beechworth, Victoria
Cal Says: An exciting example of the category of Victorian single site Nebbiolo. Floral, herbal and packed full of sour cherry on the nose this wine balances powerful tannic structure, energetic tension and playful red fruits. Not going to recommend a pairing, this is a wine to sit with and enjoy as it slowly unwinds, I suggest opening the bottle then placing in the fridge for 20 minutes before the first glass. Should comfortably cellar for 10+ years but I would love to revisit this wine in 4 years time.
